I’m not a particularly big fan of cheesy pop Christianity. Sometimes it’s so bad all you can really do is laugh at it. That’s certainly true of a lot of the T-shirts floating around out there. Now comes this. Imagine a Samson bobblehead doll with a “God’s Gym” T-shirt. Yes, I’m afraid it’s real. Check out this link if you don’t believe me.
I just don’t know whether to make fun of this or write a diatribe about bumper-sticker faith and Christian kitsch. I’ll settle for sarcasm in the interest of time.
So I’m trying to figure out what to do with this blog. On the one hand I’d love to have everyone reading it. On the other hand I want to have the freedom to say what I want without alienating people. For example, were I to freely make comments critical of the SBC I might annoy friends from seminary. You get the drift. SO… I do not intend to make personal comments about people I know, so I hope nobody takes anything personal.
Of course, the issue of “what to do” has come up a great deal lately along more deep and significant lines. Having begun work on a PhD in Christian Apologetics and Worldview last semester, I quickly found myself racked with uncertainty. Do I really want to get a PhD? Increasingly I find that I have little desire to continue. The scholarly life has little appeal for me…. I want to get out there in the real world. SO, hence the question what to do. Ministry? Something “secular?” (Perhaps I’ll write sometime on why I hate thinking of such distinctions as secular vs sacred. False dichotomy). Or plow on through? These questions often come up in conversation and in pryer (though probably not as often in prayer as they should!).
Suffice to say that as I begin this blog we stand at a crossroads. These will be interesting months.
Now I have a blog. Cool. I begin with the great expectation that hardly anybody will read much of this, with the possible exception of a few family members.
As it turns out, I don’t have much time to write at present. And I only have one hand to type due to my shoulder surgery. I suppose my posts will be short for a little while.
