OK so it is, at the moment I’m writing, still a Tropical Storm. But my namesake storm is reportedly reorganizing and is now expected to reach hurricane status. Click on the title of this post to check it out. I just wanted to make mention of it because it’s nice to have a namesake hurricane. I kind of hope it’s a good one.
In other headlines….
- A devastating fire broke out in Asuncion, Paraguay. The death toll is expected to top 600. The worst part is that hundreds died in a supermarket when the owner and his son ordered security to lock exit doors to prevent people from leaving without paying. (That, besides unconscionable cruelty, makes no sense in light of the fact that the whole place was engulfed in flames.) They’re being held for homicide. Paraguay is apparently very poor and the fire dept. and hospitals are not adequately equipped at all… esp for such a big tragedy.
- Republicans reported want to eliminate the IRS, according to excerpts from Dennis Hastert’s forthcoming book. That would be so cool! Of course I doubt it will ever happen. The Democrats and special interests probably would block it- after all government intervention is their thing. But I think this would be a pretty good issue to raise in the election – I think outside of the beaurocrats themselves and the tax-preparation industry, the average voter would be for this.
- The satirical LarkNews website (parodies pop-Christian culture) has a pretty funny article: Veggie Tales: Where Are They Now?
- An environmentally-friendly “eco-cruise” spilled 5000 gallons of fuel in the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. Now that’s ironic.
Well that’s all for now.
