I have family in Gulf Shores Alabama which was essentially ground zero for Ivan’s landfall last night. The eye went right over them. They had to get over the bridge and off the island yesterday afternoon, of course, but didn’t go too far inland. Talked to them last night in the middle of it and everyone seemed to be doing well.
Though they supposedly can’t get back over the bridge for a couple days, my cousin’s husband reportedly got over somehow and didn’t see any major damage to their house (though they no longer have a screen porch!) or my aunt and uncle’s new house. So everybody’s good.
Now the remains of Ivan are chasing down my family in Atlanta. Not nearly as severe, but still a heckuva storm. If you’ve ever experienced a normal rush hour in Atlanta, then you have an idea of what it would be like to add torrential rains, flooding, and 30 mph winds! Yikes.
I don’t think I’ve watched the Weather Channel as much in the last year as I have in the last 24 hours.
