Tom Daschle is trying to have his cake and eat it too on the abortion issue.
Check out this article about Tom Daschle, the Democratic leader in the senate. It seems that Daschle is trying to have his cake and eat it too on the abortion issue. He’s trying, as I’m sure many Democrats in the heartland do, to be pro-life at home and pro-choice in DC. Doing this requires what many politicians are quite proficient at: double-speak.
It seems that Daschle wrote a letter on behalf of NARAL (National Abortion Rights Action League), a truly evil organization along the lines of Planned Parenthood. Yet, when his challenger started running an ad talking about Daschle’s stance on the issue, Daschle backpedals, and accuses him of manipulation. Apparently Daschle takes the common tact of saying that while he is personally opposed to abortion, he does not think it’s the government’s place to make that kind of decision for a woman (of course nobody ever talks about how the decision affects the baby).
The truly outrageous and, frankly, evil twist is that Daschle says he believes that the unborn baby is in fact a human life.
That statement is made to curry favor, or to somehow rationalize his personal stance on abortion.
But look at what that really says!! It says I know that abortion is effectually ending the life of a living human baby, but I don’t think it’s the government’s place to prevent it or to punish a woman and her doctor.
What is the role of government if it is not to protect those who live within its borders? What is the purpose of government if it is not to punish those who kill?
That is an evil, insidious, and alarming argument to make.
