Yesterday afternoon we saw Hitch, a romantic comedy starring Will Smith, Eva Mendes, and Kevin James. I’m told that critics didn’t really like it; but on Rotten Tomatos it looks like good reviews outnumber bad ones. In any event, my aim is not to report what critics think (because, ultimately, we don’t really care that much), but to give a regular-guy opinion of the movie.
To be brief, we enjoyed it. We found it to be charming and funny. Also, we found it to be remarkably clean – only a couple of offensive words. So those of you more sensitive to such things will, I think, be able to enjoy the movie.
If you wanted to, you could even trace a couple of interesting themes through the movie, and single guys might actually learn a couple of things. I I hasten to point out that, as becomes clear, what you single guys will learn is not necessarily how to be a date doctor yourself, but how to treat a lady, plan a date, and the importance of ultimately being yourself, quirks and all. Hitch is a fun date movie.
I can’t resist mentioning that one of the most amusing moments at the movie happened afterward, as I overheard a woman behind us say to her friend, “Now how did Will Smith get his start? Was he Willis from Different Strokes?” Pretty funny stuff. How old does she think he is? Fortunately, her friend remembered “Fresh Prince of Bel Air.”
