This town is Derby Crazy – you just really have to be here to understand the mania. Everybody has their Derby picks like people do with the NCAA tourney. Fortunately I’ve managed to steer clear of most of the local coverage (only accomplished by not watching local news and whatnot). Incidentally, the day before the Derby they run the phillies in the Kentucky Oaks, which is a local holiday, “Louisville’s day at the track.” Would you believe local schools are out for a horse race? Only here. Anyway, in spite of not knowing much, I did manage to find the horse I’ll be rooting for:
“Post 12: AFLEET ALEX, 9-2
Owner: Cash Is King Stable LLC Trainer: Tim RitcheyJockey: Jeremy RoseRace record: 9 6-2-0 $1,315,800 Notes: Winner of the Sanford and Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga finished second in the Champagne and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. After a poor performance in the Rebel Stakes they found he had a lung infection but he bounced back in fine fashion to win the Arkansas Derby by 8 lengths. “
Those of you who love indi music may prefer to go with WILKO. As for me, I’ll be rooting for my namesake. Actually his odds look decent. The favorite is Bellamy Roads who belongs to, of all people, George Steinbrenner.
