You’ve probably seen the popular TLC show, “What Not to Wear.” Along the same lines, I’m considering a new blog category called “What Not to Say.” Last night I was taking a break from packing and was flipping through various TV stations. To my wife’s amazement and consternation, I sometimes can’t resist seeing what’s on TBN (“Twisting the Bible Nightly”). I caught about 3-5 minutes of John Hagee (rarely can I stand more than that of TBN). He was really blurring the line between preaching and politics, and just really missing the point of the little Scripture he actually used. But one statement he made really stands out as the low point. He was decrying the state of the welfare system in America and the fact that it allows otherwise healthy men to live off the dole instead of work for a living. Then his voice rose as he exclaimed: “If you’re a healthy man and you’re not working, you’re not worth the gunpowder it would take to shoot you.” Now, I’m not defending those who are too lazy to get a job and prefer to live off the State. I agree that such a situation is wrong. But, really, I’m not sure that’s what you want to communicate from God’s Word on the subject.
