Ever since seeing him play a couple of years for the Louisville Bats and then in Cincinnatti, I have been a fan of Wily Mo Pena. Honestly the reason we like him is because he has arguably the greatest name in professional sports. My fantasy baseball team is even named in his honor. I was a little disappointed when he was traded from the Reds because it meant I wouldn’t get to see him play anymore (that was before we knew we were moving), though I was consoled that he was moving to my second favorite team. Well this week Wily Mo and I come full circle as he begins a minor-league rehab assignment in Greenville for Boston’s single A affiliate, the Greenville Drive. I hope to make it out there to see him. Maybe one day he can patrol left field for my now hapless Braves.
While I’m on the subject of the Drive, there was an interesting note from last night’s game. Koby Clemens, who spent much of his childhood around Fenway Park while his father was pitching there, sent a towering blast over the Green Monster in Greenville’s West End Field, which is modeled after Fenway. Clemens, who plays for the visiting Lexington Legends, thought it was a pretty cool moment.
