College football season is upon us at last. Its about time. Given the inepitude of this year’s Braves it is nice to shift gears. Its time to see how Georgia does with a new quarterback (and it is nice to see, by the way, that the Falcons retained DJ Shockley as third-string quarterback). Its time to see if Furman can get over the hump and get back to the 1AA national championship game. Around here they’re talking an awful lot about Clemson – the hype machine says this is their year in the ACC. I hope not.
Shifting gears a bit, UGA coach Mark Richt offers the timely reminder that there’s more to life than college football. Here is a column in Sunday’s Atlanta newspaper about Richt’s focus on faith and the importance of developing character in his players. Much has been written in the past, buf its worth reading. Coach Richt is a strong believer (incidentally, his former boss Bobby Bowden was a key figure in Richt coming to Christ) and happens to be a heckuva coach, too. Even if you’re a fan of someplace like Auburn (for some reason) you have to appreciate Mark Richt.
Go Dawgs.
