It sounds sweet and innocuous enough – a nice little lullaby entitled “Sleep, Jesus, Sleep.” Its actually a very beautiful song for that matter. But behind that soft and sweet song are some lyrics that just jump out at you, like this:
“Sleep, Jesus, Sleep
We’ve come to see
You who never closed Your eyes
Watching over earth and skies
Now in frail humanity
Must sleep”
That’s the final song on the Sovereign Grace Christmas CD, which really is a fantastic CD full of good music and rich lyrics like that. The CD celebrates the miracle of the Incarnation, the mind-bending thought of God as a baby. But, unlike a lot of Christmas music, it also reminds us at times that He is not still a baby, and that His birth was more a declaration of war than we tend to think. Consider this lyric from the third verse of another song:
“All the Church rejoice
For your King returns
On a white horse wearing a crown
He will break the sky with the angel’s shout
Descending from the clouds…”
Anyway, the CD is available from Sovereign Grace here. I know its a little late for this year, but it would be a worthwhile purchase for the future. I think there’s still a free download you can check out and the lyrics should also be available.
